Character development - Grigori

Hi everyone! Today we want to talk about the character creation process. In the beginning, creating the mechanics and ensuring the fun was our main focus. Things such as narrative, characters, or historical setting were put on hold. In fact, it’s mainly the Art department that took care of these topics. The first decision made was about the general artistic direction of the game. We kind of decided it together, but the Art department had more influence on the topic. After, we started creating the main chatacter. There were some fixed concepts that Design needed to have, such as the use of occultist powers, the name of the main character, and his clothing style - influenced by the artistic direction of the game itself - but the rest came from our favourite doodling Concept Art team.

Grigori, our main character

He’s a double agent and an occultist mage. Cold as a stone, he leaves nothing to chance. Very dark and sexy, we know it. BUT, we have a list of traits you might not expect about him!

“Mainly from his appearance, I think he’s a bit of a fanatic for his looks. Always sweeping his hair back and glancing at himself in a reflection. Maybe a bit vain”.

I asked Miki what she imagined about Grigori when creating the concept art for the character. These are the sentences she wrote back to me. “Grigori strikes me as the kind to get very tense about things and cover it up with drinking or some kind of activity. And something that I thought of for him is maybe he’s artistic in some aspect. Poetry, painting, music, perhaps gardening”.

Just to let you know, the whole Design team acepted that Grigori is a gardener, as a fact. So, now, our dark, misterious and cold ocultist mage is the kind that will silently judge you when you step on the grass of the Palace.

Take a look at these concepts. We were deciding the final look for Grigori. Do you like the final result?
